Naval Association of Canada – Endowment Fund (NAC-EF) Grants

This past summer, I had the privilege of delivering grant cheques to Broadmead Lodge and The Maritime Museum of BC on behalf of the NAC-EF.

Broadmead Care had applied for a grant to facilitate the purchase of special equipment for comfort and care that assists their residents with mobility around, bed, baths, chairs and the like. I had the opportunity to tour the Lodge earlier this year and was impressed on how well this specific equipment is being distributed throughout the facility. It is all located near to the site of use but tucked away in a way such that you feel that you are in a residence, not a hospital.  I noticed that the building is being very well maintained and well decorated with an aura of friendliness and comfort throughout the halls.

This picture shows my presentation of the cheque to Janet Power, Executive Director, Broadmead Care, with Malcolm, a resident who enjoys much of his time in the main foyer conversing with residents and visitors as they come and go. He mentioned that, although he actually served with the air forces, he prefers naval style ball caps.

The Maritime Museum of British Columba is currently housed in temporary fashion on the lower floor of BC Corporation Building. It is very well climate controlled so is an ideal place to store the massive inventory that is held by the museum. I certainly hope that they find a more suitable site for such an important endeavour. The grant presented this year was to facilitate the cataloguing and photographing of the bulk of the artifacts. The intention is to make the collection more available for public and academic research and also facilitate an efficient display of the material in the future. Several members of the NAC- Vancouver Island Brach volunteer their personal time in completing this task.

This picture shows some of the artifacts being catalogued. Joining me are Heather Feeney, Collections and Exhibits Manager, VAdm Bob George (Ret’d), NAC volunteer, and Brittany Vis, Executive Director, MMBC.

These pictures below show a small portion of the massive amount of historical stock held by the museum. The hangers used in this particular display of old uniforms were obtained through a previous NAC-EF Grant.

It was gratifying for me to see these two organizations supporting the aims of the Naval Association of Canada, and the Endowment Fund assisting them in return.

Yours aye,
