Edition 651  HMCS Queen  Quote: “President Donald Trump has called for US defence spending to be increased to $1.5tn (£1.1tn) in 2027 for what he called “these very troubled and dangerous times”.  That would be more than 50% higher than this year’s $901bn budget, which was approved by Congress in December.  “This will allow us to build the “Dream Military” that we have long been entitled to and, more importantly, that will keep us SAFE and SECURE, regardless of foe,” Trump said on social media on Wednesday.  In separate posts, the president said he would crack down on payouts to bosses and shareholders of major US defence contractors unless the firms speed up deliveries of armaments and build new manufacturing plants.”  Trump calls for US military spending to rise more than 50% to $1.5tn, Osmond Chia, BBC, 7 January 2026.

THIS WEEK IN RCN/MARITIME HISTORY

11 January 1914   The Canadian Arctic Expedition ship Karluk sank north of Siberia.  Captain Robert Bartlett embarked on a 1,000-kilometer dog-sled journey to find help.  By the end of April, the two men reached East Cape (also known as Cape Dezhnev) on the Bering Strait, where Bartlett searched for a vessel that would take him to the closest wireless station at Alaska.  Bartlett finally arrived at St. Michael, Alaska on 28 May and wired government officials in Ottawa of the Wrangel Island castaways.  The Canadian schooner King and Winge rescued the survivors from Wrangel Island on 7 September 1914 – almost eight months after the Karluk sank.

11 January 1957  HMCS Magnificent arrives in Port Said with the main body of the Canadian contribution in troops and materiel to the United Nations Emergency Force controlling the Israeli-Egyptian border.

12 January 1910  The Naval Service Act was introduced by the Liberal federal government of Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier.  The initiation of this act was a direct response to the naval arms race that was happening between Britain and Germany.

12 January 1942  HMCS Red Deer rescues 93 survivors from the British SS Cyclops, torpedoed by U-123, 125 miles southeast of Cape Sable, killing 88 merchant sailors.  Cyclops is the first victim of Operation Drumbeat, the un-restricted U-boat campaign off the coast of Canada and the US.

13 January 1943  RCN corvette HMCS Ville de Québec commanded by LCdr A.R.E. Coleman, RCNR sank the German submarine U-224 west of Oran Algeria.

14 January 1952   HMCS Uganda was renamed HMCS Quebec.  Uganda was the only Canadian warship to fight the Japanese.  Given Uganda’s controversial early departure from the western Pacific just before the end of WW2 the renaming was inevitable.

15 January 1888  Born in Victoria BC, later to become VAdm (RN) Harold Tom Baillie-Grohman, DSO, OBE, CB.  Joined the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet, RN in HMS Britannia in 1903.  He served in WW1 in the Grand Fleet, in Dover Patrol in destroyers and minesweepers.  Commanding Officer of HMS Ramillies in 1939, part of 1st Battle Squadron, Mediterranean.  Promoted Vice-Admiral in 1943 and made Flag Officer-in-Command Harwich in 1945.  He was Flag Officer-in-Command Schlesweig Holstein from 1945, retired in 1946, died on 23 September 1978.

15 January  1991 The UN security Council deadline for Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait passes and the Persian Gulf War begins.

Significant RCN Dates – If you notice any omissions or errors please inform me.  Pointing out any more modern significant dates is encouraged.  The list draws primarily from the Directory of History and Heritage’s comprehensive “Significant Dates in Canadian Military History”, the now defunct “Canada Channel”, “Legion Magazine”, The Naval Service of Canada, Its Official History Vol 1-3, NAC member Roger Litwiller’s excellent web site, encyclopedic guidance from NAC member Fraser McKee, the Uboat.net site, and anywhere else I can find credible information.  For the merchant ship history, a special thanks to NAC member Bill Dziadyk for his able assistance and detailed work.  The RCN lost 1,965 men and 24 ships during the War, most of them in the Atlantic.  A comprehensive list of the staggering merchant losses – sunk, damaged, or lost – Canadian Merchant Ship Losses of the Second World War, 1939-1945 by Rob Fisher {Revised June 2001}, and for the loss of individual personnel RCN Ship Histories, Convoy Escort Movements, Casualty Lists 1939-1947)  Last and far from least Gary Weir’s For Prosperity’s Sake RCN historical project site.
