NAC News – Edition 592 (Listerville)
Your weekly national and international naval news for the week of November 22nd, 2024
Edition: YTL592 Listerville (still serving after 50 years) Quotes: “The Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels offer Canada a capability and presence in the Arctic that it has not had since the late 1950s. While central to the country’s security and defence posture in the region, the class has room for improvements. In this article, the Operations Coordinator onboard HMCS Frédérick Rolette, PO1 Douglas Theedom offers thoughts on how to get more from Canada’s premier Arctic platform. These opinions are his own and do not represent those of the Royal Canadian Navy.” Realizing the AOPV’s Potential, Canadian Maritime Security Network iDEAS Series, Douglas L. Theedom (Article in Canada section below)

THIS WEEK IN RCN/MARITIME HISTORY
23 November 1809 Convicted in Canada’s first piracy trial, Edward Jordan is hanged in Halifax.
24 November 1944 HMCS Shawinigan while on independent anti-submarine patrol in the Cabot Strait, was torpedoed and sunk by U1228. All 91 of the crew perished.
25 November 1950 HMCS Nootka leaves Halifax for the first of two tours of duty in Korea.
25 November 1953 HMCS Cayuga sails for duty off Korea for the third and final time.
28 November 1944 The first Allied convoy sailed up the Scheldt and discharged its cargo at the port of Antwerp. Given the Canadian army’s efforts of liberation, it was fitting that the first vessel in the convoy was the Canadian-built SS Fort Cataraqui.
28 November 1953 The first group of 48 RCN volunteers left Montreal by air for submarine training with the Royal Navy. In March 1962, the RCN got the go-ahead to buy three British Oberon-class submarines. These were the first newly built submarines we bought since the unconventional purchase of CC 1 and CC 2 in 1914. These new submarines formed the Halifax-based First Canadian Submarine Squadron: HMC Submarines Ojibwa, Onondaga, and Okanagan. When they arrived in the mid-1960s, the Oberons were among the quietest submarines in the world.
29 November 1957 HMCS Kenora and Kentville, two paid off minesweepers, are transferred to the Turkish navy as Bandirma and Bartin.
SIGNIFICANT RCN DATES – If you see any omissions or errors please inform me, and any more modern significant dates are also welcomed. The list draws primarily from the Directory of History and Heritage’s comprehensive “Significant Dates in Canadian Military History”, the now defunct “Canada Channel”, “Legion Magazine”, The Naval Service of Canada, Its Official History Vol 1-3, NAC member Roger Litwiller’s excellent web site, encyclopedic guidance from NAC member Fraser McKee, the Uboat.net site, and anywhere else I can find credible information. For the merchant ship history, a special thanks to NAC member Bill Dziadyk for his able assistance and detailed work. The RCN lost 1,965 men and 24 ships during the War, most of them in the Atlantic. A comprehensive list of the staggering merchant losses – sunk, damaged, or lost – Canadian Merchant Ship Losses of the Second World War, 1939-1945 by Rob Fisher {Revised June 2001}, and for the loss of individual personnel RCN Ship Histories, Convoy Escort Movements, Casualty Lists 1939-1947)
