NAC News – Edition 588 (Youville)
Your weekly national and international naval news for the week of October 25th, 2024
Edition: YTS588 Youville Quotes: “For Israelis, Sinwar’s death is a symbol of justice served to the arch-terrorist most responsible for the atrocities of October 7. It is an important psychological and political milestone for them, in order to turn the page on a horrific year since that day.” Natan Sachs, Brookings Institute, and importantly “It’s a test of Israeli leadership. [Sinwar’s death] is an opportunity for Israel to declare victory and accept a cease-fire. A cease-fire in Gaza could lead to a reduction in regional tensions.” 17 October 2024, Bruce Riedel, NBC News

THIS WEEK IN RCN/MARITIME HISTORY
26 October 1952 HMCS Crusader destroys a North Korean supply train near Songjin: RCN gunners account for the destruction of eight enemy trains during the conflict.
28 October 1955 HMCS St. Laurent (second of name) is commissioned as the first warship of all-Canadian design and construction.
29 October 1952 HMCS Athabaskan leaves Esquimalt, B.C., on its third tour of duty in Korea.
30 October 1918 HMCS Galiano was lost, with all her crew of 39 and one female passenger, in Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island. HMCS Galiano and her crew of Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reservists was the only Canadian Naval vessel lost during WWI – only 12 days before the armistice to end the “war to end all wars”. Their sacrifice is marked by a memorial to the ship’s company in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria, erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
30 October 1942 A RCAF Hudson of No. 145(BR) Squadron destroyed U658 with a salvo of depth charges 320 miles out of St. John’s Newfoundland. Later that same day, a Digby of No. 10(BR) RCAF Squadron sent U520 to the bottom far out in the Atlantic.
1 November 1914 Battle at Coronel A brass plaque at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Esquimalt, BC, is dedicated to the four ex-cadets of the Royal Naval College of Canada and men of Her Majesty’s Ship (HMS) Good Hope who were killed in action in 1914. Four cadets of the first class of the Royal Naval College of Canada, were the first Canadian Navy casualties in WWI. Midshipman Malcolm Cann, Midshipman John V.W. Hatheway, Midshipman William Archibald Palmer, and Midshipman Arthur Wiltshire Silver, died when the British warship HMS Good Hope went down with no survivors, sunk by the German navy. These casualties were avenged 8 December at the Battle of the Falkland Islands.
1 November 1920 Three British ships, Aurora, Patriot, and Patrician are officially commissioned into the RCN at Portsmouth.
1 November 1941 Reserve Divisions are commissioned as HMCS, local names chosen for each
SIGNIFICANT RCN DATES – If you see any omissions or errors please inform me, and any more modern significant dates are also welcomed. The list draws primarily from the Directory of History and Heritage’s comprehensive “Significant Dates in Canadian Military History”, the now defunct “Canada Channel”, “Legion Magazine”, The Naval Service of Canada, Its Official History Vol 1-3, NAC member Roger Litwiller’s excellent web site, encyclopedic guidance from NAC member Fraser McKee, the Uboat.net site, and anywhere else I can find credible information. For the merchant ship history, a special thanks to NAC member Bill Dziadyk for his able assistance and detailed work. The RCN lost 1,965 men and 24 ships during the War, most of them in the Atlantic. A comprehensive list of the staggering merchant losses – sunk, damaged, or lost – Canadian Merchant Ship Losses of the Second World War, 1939-1945 by Rob Fisher {Revised June 2001}, and for the loss of individual personnel RCN Ship Histories, Convoy Escort Movements, Casualty Lists 1939-1947)
