AMENDED 3 May NAC and the RCN will mount a Battle of the Atlantic Gala Dinner.  Detailed information on the event and the menu options is available at 2023 Battle of the Atlantic Gala.  Registration can be completed from that page.  Should you need assistance with the registration or have further questions, please contact us at NACcoordinator@outlook.com.  Our Naval Affairs Programme Coordinator Dr. Ann Griffiths has created a graphic novel for NAC.  It’s about an ordinary Canadian fellow who serves in an RCN ship in the Battle of the Atlantic.  It’s now at the printer and is scheduled to be available for the gala.  It’s called ‘Hunter and Hunted: On Board a Canadian Corvette in the Battle of the Atlantic.’  To make a connection, it was Ann’s naval affairs programme initiative that created “Mom’s in the Navy” which is available at the link, [as well as “An Undersea Adventure” and “Over the Horizon” were created], and this new graphic novel will be made available in the same fashion.

17 May 2023  ABCMI Innovation Day at Vancouver, BC 09:00 – 16:30 local in the Vancouver Convention Centre West, 1055 Canada Pl. ABCMI Members – $135 plus GST, Non Members – $225 plus GST, Lunch and health breaks are incl.  Innovation Day tickets.  ABCMI is also hosting an evening Networking Reception on the evening of 16 May, 5:00-6:00 PM at the Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel.  Join them for appetizers, a no-host bar and plenty of great conversations. The Canadian Naval Review is holding its annual essay competition again in 2023.  There will be a prize of $1,000 provided by the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, for the best essay.  The winning essay will be published in CNR. THIS WEEK IN RCN/MARITIME HISTORY

22 April 1943  The cargo liner MV Amerika (a straggler from eastbound convoy HX-234) was sunk at 01:54 on 22 April 1943 by U-306, about 145 nautical miles south of Greenland.  Fifty-three Royal Canadian Air Force personnel were the only passengers embarked during this eastbound crossing of the North Atlantic.  Thirty-seven of the RCAF passengers were killed. Forty-two crew members and seven DEMS gunners were also lost.  The master, twenty-nine crew members, eight gunners and the 16 RCAF survivors were rescued by HMS Asphodel and landed at Greenock, Scotland.

22 April 1944  HMCS Swansea commanded by A/Cdr Clarence A. King, DSO, DSC, RCNR with HMCS Matane commanded by A/Cdr A. Frank C. Layard, DSO, RN using depth charges sink U311 south of Iceland.  Cdr Kings third submarine in 7 weeks.

23 April 1947  HMCS Malahat re-commissioned as Victoria’s Naval Reserve Division; originally commissioned as naval recruiting centre January 15, 1944.  They grew from the No.1 Half Company of the Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve (RNCVR) that was established 18 May 1914.  HMCS Scotian was commissioned as Halifax’s Naval Reserve Division.  The first reserve unit was the Halifax Half-Company, which operated from 1925 to 1935. From 1935 to 1939, the unit’s name was changed to Halifax Division.  The two were the 14th and 15th of the 24 divisions commissioned.  The remainder of the 24 Naval Reserve Divisions would be subsequently commissioned, with the last being HMCS Queen Charlotte (Charlottetown) in 1994.

23 April 1948, while returning from a southern taring cruise the cruiser HMCS Ontario and the destroyer HMCS Crescent spotted a mine 200 miles north of San Francisco.  The Ontario was forced to make an emergency turn to avoid the mine, believed to be a Japanese type JA.  The crew of Crescent destroyed the mine with gunfire.

25 April 1945  Canada one of 50 nations attending founding United Nations Conference on International Organization, opening in San Francisco; will approve United Nations Charter on June 26.  San Francisco, California.

25 April 1967  Commons passes Bill C-243, “The Canadian Forces Reorganization Act,” unifying the RCN, Canadian Army, and Royal Canadian Air Force into one service, the Canadian Armed Forces, with common uniform and rank designations; act comes into effect February 1, 1968.

26 April 1778  Captain James Cook sails from Nootka Sound, tracing the coast of British Columbia.

26 April 1944  HMCS Huron commanded by LCdr Herbert S. Rayner, DSC,  RCN, with HMCS Haida commanded by Cdr Harry G. DeWolf, DSO, RCN, and HMCS Athabaskan commanded by A/LCdr John H. Stubbs, DSO, RCN fought two German destroyers off Ile de Bas, France, and drove a flaming German warship T-29 aground.  The modern HMCS Harry DeWolf is named in DeWolf’s honour.

28 April 1818  U.S. Senate ratifies the Rush-Bagot Convention, signed April 28/29, 1817, making it a lawful treaty of the United States; limits naval forces on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. Washington, DC.
