SUBJ: OCCUPATION NAME CHANGE: MARS TO NWO
- ALL ASPECTS OF THE RCN ARE BEING RETOOLED AND MODERNIZED IN PREPARATION FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF SHIPS. ONE OF THE MAJOR
UNDERTAKINGS OF OCCUPATION ANALYSIS (OA), AND MILITARY EMPLOYMENT
STRUCTURE IMPLEMENTATION PLANS (MESIP),ARE TO ENSURE THAT OUR
OCCUPATION STRUCTURES HAVE THE FLEXIBILITY AND AGILITY THAT WILL BE
REQUIRED AS A RESULT OF THE SMALLER CREW SIZES IN OUR NEW SHIPS.
WEAPONS ENGINEERING TECHNICIANS AND MARINE TECHNICIANS ARE NEW
OCCUPATIONS IN THE RCN, AND ANALYSIS ON THE COMBAT OPERATOR
OCCUPATION HAS BEGUN
- THIS WORK ALSO EXTENDS TO THE OFFICER CORPS. THE MARITIME SURFACE
AND SUBSURFACE (MARS) OCCUPATION MESIP HAS JUST BEEN COMPLETED. ONE
OF THE OUTCOMES OF THE MESIP WILL BE TO CHANGE THE NAME OF THE
OCCUPATION TO BETTER REFLECT THE PROFESSION OF OUR NAVAL LEADERS,
MARINERS, WARRIORS AND MANAGERS IN ADDITION TO BE ABLE TO BETTER
COMMUNICATE THE PROFESSION TO CANADIANS. CONSEQUENTLY, THE
OCCUPATION NAME MARS OFFICER WILL BE RETIRED. OFFICERS OF THIS
OCCUPATION WILL HENCEFORTH BE KNOWN AS NAVAL WARFARE OFFICERS (NWO)
- THIS INITIATIVE IS NEITHER UNIQUE WITHIN, NOR TO, THE RCN. OUTSIDE THE RCN, THE NAMES OF SEVERAL CAF OCCUPATIONS WILL BE REVIEWED AND CHANGED AS PART OF THE OP GENERATION INITIATIVE UNDER THE RECENTLY ISSUED QUOTE STRONG, SECURE, ENGAGED END QUOTE DEFENCE POLICY. THE INTENT OF THESE NAME CHANGES IS TO CREATE MORE MODERN, PALATABLE NAMES THAT BOTH INSPIRE AND INFORM, WHILE REMOVING ANY AMBIGUITY OR PERCEIVED DISCRIMINATION ON EXISTING NAMES. THE NWO NAME WILL BE AMONG THE FIRST GROUP OF DIRECTOR PERSONNEL AND GENERATION REQUIREMENT (DPGR) LED OCCUPATION NAME CHANGES.
- ORDERS, DIRECTIVES, TRAINING MODULES AND RECRUITING MATERIAL WILL
BE ADJUSTED IN DUE COURSE AS WE INSTITUTIONALIZE THE NAME CHANGE.
NOTWITHSTANDING THESE PROCESSES, THE TITLE NWO IS EFFECTIVE
IMMEDIATELY. THE MOSID 00207, INCLUDING THE NUMERICAL DESIGNATION OF
THE APPLICABLE SUB-OCCUPATIONS, HAS NOT CHANGED. ANY QUESTIONS
REGARDING THIS CHANGE MAY BE DIRECTED TO THE NWO OCCUPATION
