NAC News – Edition 634 HMCS Cartier

Your weekly national and international naval news for the week of September 12, 2025
Edition 634 HMCS Cartier (Editor – see pic of beautiful crown-of-sails hockey sweaters!) Quote: “The PRC’s maritime insurgency is not limited to the South China Sea. It is a global phenomenon. This maritime insurgency is not fought with gunfire but with corruption, development loans and aid, and the PRC’s deep-water fishing fleet. More than 17,000 vessels fishing throughout the world routinely engage in Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing (IUUF), often acting as a civilian vanguard for PRC state objectives. The situation is particularly acute in the South Pacific, where Chinese fishing fleets exploit the limited enforcement capacity of Pacific Island Countries (PICs), deplete sovereign marine resources, and undermine local economies, eroding governance, and sovereignty in the process.” Countering the People’s Republic of China’s maritime insurgency in the South Pacific, Jason Lancaster, CIMSEC, 9 September 2025

THIS WEEK IN RCN/MARITIME HISTORY
13 September 1759 General Wolf’s forces conducted an amphibious assault and stormed the cliffs of Quebec City and defeated the French. This battle marked the beginning of the end of France’s rule in North America.
13/14 September 1942 500 km east of Newfoundland, U-Boat U-91 torpedoes and sinks RCN River Class destroyer HMCS Ottawa (A/LCdr Clark Anderson Rutherford, RCN) in the North Atlantic, while escorting convoy ON-127; hit by two torpedoes, she blows up and sinks immediately; 113 of her ship’s company were lost including the CO, LCdr C.A. Rutherford, who had given his own life belt to a rating, plus 6 RN seaman and 22 merchant seamen. There were only 69 survivors.
15 September 1940 Single men aged between 21 and 24 are called up for WWII.
16 September 1910 The cruiser HMCS Niobe formerly of the Royal Navy becomes the second warship to join the Canadian Navy arriving at Halifax in October.
16 September 1939 The first convoy of the war, designated HX-1, leaves Halifax for the United Kingdom. Eighteen merchant ships are escorted by HMCS Saguenay and HMCS St. Laurent to a North Atlantic rendezvous with Royal Navy cruisers Berwick and York. Subsequent convoys included all ships bound for the United Kingdom whose speed was between nine and fifteen knots, and unarmed vessels of over fifteen knots. Other vessels, including all ships sailing to destinations outside Britain, were able to proceed independently for some months after the beginning of the war. Soon, two convoys a week were sailing from Halifax. By the end of 1939, some 410 ships in 14 HX convoys had crossed the Atlantic. Escort work would remain the RCN’s chief responsibility for the duration of the war.
16 September 1942 The first of sixteen RCN corvettes sails for the Mediterranean Sea to take part in the North African landings (Operation Torch).
17 September 1904 Captain Joseph Bernier departs from Québec on the Canadian Government Steamship Arctic; given the command because of his interest in the Polar regions (he had devised a plan to reach the North Pole via the Bering Strait); will make 12 expeditions into polar seas in the next 20 years; he will spend the winter in Hudson Bay collecting Canadian customs duties from whalers and traders.
18 September 1943 Commander (later Captain) Adelaide Sinclair became the first Canadian director of the WRCNS, an appointment she held until the service was disbanded. Formerly a lecturer in political science at the University of Toronto, Sinclair went on after the war to prominent positions in public service. From 1957 until retirement in 1967 she was deputy executive director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
19 September 1941 German U-74 torpedoed and sank the Flower Class corvette HMCS Lévis 200 km off Cape Farewell, Greenland; 18 lives were lost. She was the first corvette sunk in Second World War.
19 September 1943 A Liberator flown by Flight Lieutenant R.F. Fisher, M.I.D., and crew from RCAF Squadron 10 sank U-341 in the North Atlantic. Fisher from Armstrong BC was subsequently killed during a Liberator crash.
19 September 1969 During the reorganized of the Canadian Armed Forces a 50% cut in NATO Canadian manpower was made, and the retirement of RCN’s only aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure was directed. Unification and the loss of HMCS Bonaventure was the one two punch that caused the demise of naval aviation. This step was counterintuitive given that aviation is arguably the most significant enabling element of any modern military. To this day Canada remains the only major nation without a dedicated naval air force, and the only G7 nation without some sort of amazingly versatile large aviation ship.
SIGNIFICANT RCN DATES – If you see any omissions or errors please inform me, and any more modern significant dates are also welcomed. The list draws primarily from the Directory of History and Heritage’s comprehensive “Significant Dates in Canadian Military History”, the now defunct “Canada Channel”, “Legion Magazine”, The Naval Service of Canada, Its Official History Vol 1-3, NAC member Roger Litwiller’s excellent web site, encyclopedic guidance from NAC member Fraser McKee, the Uboat.net site, and anywhere else I can find credible information. For the merchant ship history, a special thanks to NAC member Bill Dziadyk for his able assistance and detailed work. The RCN lost 1,965 men and 24 ships during the War, most of them in the Atlantic. A comprehensive list of the staggering merchant losses – sunk, damaged, or lost – Canadian Merchant Ship Losses of the Second World War, 1939-1945 by Rob Fisher {Revised June 2001}, and for the loss of individual personnel RCN Ship Histories, Convoy Escort Movements, Casualty Lists 1939-1947)
