Howie Smith has been a member of the Naval Association of Canada since 1999 and in 2014 joined the Board of the Ottawa Branch as Vice-President. He was appointed as President of the Branch in June 2015. He served in the Navy as a MARS Officer where he was appointed to seagoing positions on both coasts and employed in several staff assignments in the National Defence Headquarters.
Following naval service he joined an Ottawa-based firm (Lansdowne Technologies) and has subsequently been engaged in providing project management and strategic planning consulting services in both the private and public sectors. He has facilitated numerous planning and business development sessions within both government and industry. In 2005, he was appointed as the President of Lansdowne and with the establishment of the Critical Infrastructure Institute of Canada, named as the institute’s first president. In 2008, he transitioned from the presidency of the firm and is currently affiliated with Lansdowne as an Associate consultant operating his own private practice.
