Born in Windsor, Ontario, Bill began his naval career in RCSCC Admiral Hose at Riverside High School, rising to the rank of Midshipman, and presented with his commission by Ad. Hose himself. He went on to the University of Western Ontario, and joined the UNTD’s in 1959 at HMCS Prevost, where he served as a Cadet Captain, and on the staff of the Leadership School at HMCS Cornwallis in 1962. With the closing of Prevost in 1964, he was placed on the Reserve Retired List and spent the next 13 years as a Secondary School teacher and administrator. In 1977 he returned to University and was ordained for the Anglican Diocese of Niagara in 1980, and in 1993 was installed as a Canon of Christ’s Church Cathedral. After 12 years of parish ministry and 15 years on Diocesan Staff he retired in 2007. He returned to the navy in 1993, joining the UNTD Association of Upper Canada, becoming its first webmaster, and expanding it to a national association during his tenure as President from 2007-2014. He joined the NAC in 2004, and is currently serving as Vice President of the Toronto Branch and Chair of the Hamilton Area Group, and as a National Director, first elected in 2014, and again in 2016. He is a member of the Halton Naval Veterans, and Chaplain to the Burl-Oak Naval Veterans. Bill is a Life Member of the Friends of HMCS Haida, and served two terms as a member of their Board of Directors.
He is also a Life Trustee of The Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, and a Life Member of the Warplane Heritage Museum. He has been awarded the 125th Ann. Of Confederation, The Diamond Jubilee, and the Sovereign’s Volunteer Medals for his work in the community and with Naval Veterans. Bill met his wife, Jette, during her first week on campus at Western, and they have two surviving children, Kimberly and Ian.
